What is NLP?

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an approach that explores the relationship between the way we think, the language we use and the behaviours we develop. It is based on the understanding that our thoughts, beliefs and experiences influence how we perceive the world and respond to different situations.

Originally developed in the 1970s, NLP was created by studying highly successful therapists and communicators to identify the patterns, strategies and techniques that contributed to positive outcomes. The aim was to understand how people create change and develop practical methods that could be applied to help others achieve similar results.

Each of us experiences the world in our own unique way. Every day, our brains process vast amounts of information through our senses, filtering and organising it based on our past experiences, beliefs, values and expectations. This process shapes our personal understanding of the world and influences how we think, feel and behave.

Sometimes these patterns can be helpful, but at other times they may contribute to anxiety, self doubt, unhelpful habits or behaviours that no longer serve us well. NLP helps identify these patterns and provides techniques that can support more positive ways of thinking, responding and communicating.

NLP in therapy sessions

NLP offers a wide range of practical tools and techniques that can help people understand and change unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour. While NLP can be used as a standalone approach, I often integrate it with other therapies including Hypnotherapy and CBT, to create a personalised approach that supports your needs and goals.

There is a close connection between NLP and Hypnotherapy and many of the techniques used within NLP have been influenced by the study of communication, behaviour and human change. Combining these approaches can be particularly effective in helping people develop greater self awareness, challenge limiting beliefs and create new ways of responding to situations that may previously have felt difficult or overwhelming.

NLP can be especially helpful when you would like to think, feel or behave differently in certain situations. This may include overcoming fears and phobias, building confidence, improving communication skills, managing anxiety or breaking unwanted habits and patterns.

As a Hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner, I often incorporate NLP techniques into therapy sessions to help clients better understand how their thoughts and behaviours influence their experiences. Together, we can identify patterns that may be holding you back and develop practical strategies that support positive, lasting change and help you move closer to your goals.
