Therapy

Are you ready to make a change?

I use a blend of hypnotherapy and talking therapies to help you overcome the problems or issues that are holding you back and preventing you from living the life you want to lead.

Therapy Sessions

It’s a common belief that therapy involves delving deep into the past to uncover and analyse long forgotten memories and experiences.

Whilst it’s helpful to know when a problem first started and where it came from, we cannot go back in time and change the past; no matter how much we might want to. What we can change, is how we feel now and in the future. I use a modern solution focused approach which combines your existing strengths with therapy tools and techniques to help you get to where you want to be.

What to Expect

First Session

During your first session, we’ll spend some time talking in more detail about what has brought you to therapy, along with any past experiences that may be relevant and what you would like to achieve.

This session is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about therapy or how I work. My approach is supportive, collaborative and tailored to each individual, so there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. Everyone’s experiences are different, which is why I combine Hypnotherapy with a range of Talking Therapies and therapeutic techniques to best support your needs.

We will also discuss ways you can continue supporting yourself between sessions. Depending on your situation, I may provide an audio download to listen to, ask you to practise self help techniques, or recommend simple therapy exercises such as keeping a journal. These activities are designed to reinforce the work we do during sessions, helping you to develop new skills and build your confidence as you work towards your therapy goals.

Further sessions

In future sessions, we’ll review how things have been since your previous session, discuss any progress or difficulties you may have experienced and continue building on the work we are doing together.

Therapy is a collaborative process where my role is to support and guide you in making the changes that will help you to move forward. Hypnotherapy and Talking Therapies can be highly effective in creating positive, lasting change, but your motivation, openness and willingness to engage in the process are also an essential part of achieving a successful outcome.

Every person’s experience is different, which means that there is no fixed number of sessions that is right for everyone. Many people work with me for around six sessions and often begin to notice changes within a few sessions, while others may need a little more time depending on their circumstances and goals.

It’s also important to remember that just because something may have affected you for a long time, it does not necessarily mean it will take a long time to change. Meaningful progress can sometimes happen more quickly than people expect – if they are ready to make a change.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most appropriate type of therapy depends on your situation and the problem or issue you would like to address.

Most therapy sessions involve a blend of hypnotherapy and talking therapies. We will discuss your situation at your first session and decide on the best approach for you.

Standard therapy sessions are 50 minutes in order to maximise concentration and get the best from the process. Your first session is usually a little longer (approximately 60 to 90 minutes) to allow sufficient time to discuss your situation and answer any questions you may have.

Therapy sessions provide a time and space for you to explore your situation. During your first session, we will discuss a number of areas connected with your problem or issue including everyday events, problems, feelings, thoughts, memories, past experiences and the future. At each session, we will discuss your progress since we last met and a combination of therapy techniques may be used during your session.

You may be given exercises or tasks to complete between your sessions to build on the work done during your session and to help you develop new skills and strategies to enable you to overcome the problem or issue.

Hypnotherapy sessions are typically 2 to 3 weeks apart as this allows sufficient time for your subconscious mind to process new ideas and for you to start making changes.

Other types of talking therapy sessions such as Counselling, are usually weekly, especially in the early stages.

We will discuss the frequency and number of sessions during your first session.

The standard therapy session fees are £80 per session. A deposit of £40 is payable online before the online initial consultation or your first therapy session and this is refunded at or following your final therapy session. For more information, please see the fees page.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach in therapy, so it’s difficult to say exactly how many sessions you may need because everyone is different and some people make changes more quickly than others.

The number of sessions also depends on the problem or issue, along with your level of motivation and participation in your therapy sessions.

Hypnotherapy involves working on a subconscious level and is often relatively rapid, with many issues requiring around 4 to 6 sessions depending on you and your situation.

With talking therapies such as Counselling or CBT, a course of 6 sessions is often recommended in the first instance, followed by a review. Working with and resolving issues can often be achieved in a fairly short number of sessions and some issues may require longer term therapy. Often problems are resolved in short term therapy (12 sessions or less).

During your first session, we will talk about your situation and decide on the most appropriate therapy approach for you.

If you are committed to making changes, the chance of success is high. However, there are a variety of factors that can affect the outcome of therapy and for this reason, it is unethical to offer any guarantee of success.

Generally speaking, there are usually three reasons why therapy may not be as successful as desired:

  1. You are not ready to fully embrace or participate in the process, or you are not genuinely ready to make changes.
  2. You do not want to make changes for yourself, but are actually participating in therapy sessions for the benefit of someone else (e.g. feeling under pressure because a partner or friend wants you to have therapy).
  3. There are hidden ‘secondary gains’ which mean that there is an unintended benefit from continuing with the problem behaviour or response (e.g. if you have a fear of flying, the fear may continue because you are actually afraid of being away from home or may experience separation anxiety when away from a partner or other family members).

Talking therapies have a good track record in helping people to make lasting changes, however everyone responds differently and therefore results may vary from person to person. Your motivation and participation are the keys to your success, so you need to play your part too.

The problems or issues that people often seek help with, have usually occurred as a result of past experiences and unhelpful thought processes. To overcome a problem or respond differently, the desired change comes from within; therefore, we need to change our thoughts and behaviours.

During your therapy sessions, you may be shown how to use self help tools and techniques to enable you to make the changes that you desire. How you use these tools and the level of effort applied, will affect how quickly you experience positive changes. Remember, your motivation and participation are the keys to your success.

"I feel as though things are taking a positive turn and I'm feeling much better within myself."
