Rewind therapy sessions
What is Rewind Therapy?
Rewind Therapy is a gentle and effective therapeutic approach that is often used to help people experiencing trauma, fears, phobias, anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Unlike some older therapeutic approaches that relied heavily on repeated exposure to distressing memories, Rewind Therapy is designed to work in a much calmer and more comfortable way.
Many people who experience trauma or phobic responses can feel trapped in automatic emotional and physical reactions that seem difficult to control. Rewind Therapy aims to help the brain process and store difficult experiences differently, so that memories lose much of their emotional intensity and no longer trigger the same level of anxiety or distress.
The technique is based on an earlier Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) approach known as VK Dissociation and has become widely recognised as an effective therapy for trauma-related symptoms and anxiety conditions. Rather than focusing on repeatedly talking through traumatic experiences in detail, Rewind Therapy works by helping to separate the emotional response from the memory itself.
During the process, clients remain safe, relaxed and in control throughout the session. Many people find Rewind Therapy to be a more comfortable experience than traditional exposure-based approaches, particularly when working with traumatic memories or long-standing fears.
Rewind Therapy can be helpful for a wide range of issues including trauma, PTSD, panic attacks, fears, phobias and anxiety-related responses. It is often integrated with other therapeutic approaches to provide support that is tailored to the individual and their specific needs.
Rewind Therapy for PTSD, trauma and phobias
When we experience something that feels frightening, overwhelming or threatening, the brain automatically activates the body’s survival response, often referred to as the ‘fight, flight or freeze’ response.
This survival response is a natural protective mechanism designed to help us respond quickly to danger. In most situations, once the event has passed, the brain is able to process what happened and store the memory appropriately. Over time, the emotional intensity connected to the experience begins to reduce, allowing us to think about the event without feeling overwhelmed by it.
However, during highly distressing or traumatic experiences, the brain may struggle to fully process the event. Instead of the memory being stored in a way that feels like something from the past, it can remain linked to the brain’s emotional alarm system. This can cause the body and mind to continue reacting as though the danger is still happening in the present moment, even long after the original event has passed.
This is why people experiencing trauma, PTSD or phobias may notice intense emotional or physical reactions to certain thoughts, memories, situations or triggers. The response is often automatic and can feel difficult to control, even when logically they know they are safe.
Rewind Therapy works by helping the brain safely reprocess these experiences so that the memory becomes less emotionally charged and no longer triggers the same level of fear, anxiety or distress. The aim is not to erase the memory or deny what has happened, but to help the brain store it differently so that it feels more like something that happened in the past, rather than something that is still happening now.
Many people find Rewind Therapy to be a gentle and effective approach because it does not require them to repeatedly re-live traumatic experiences in detail. Instead, the process works in a calm, controlled and supportive way to help reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories and anxiety responses.
Moving beyond trauma
Since its original development, the Rewind Technique has continued to evolve into a gentle and effective therapeutic approach that incorporates relaxation and dissociation techniques to help make the process feel safer and more comfortable for clients.
Everyone’s experience of trauma is different and people vary in how much they want to talk about difficult experiences during therapy. Some people find it helpful to openly discuss what has happened to them as part of their healing process, whilst others feel more comfortable working without going into detail. One of the benefits of the Rewind Technique is that you do not need to repeatedly describe or re-live traumatic experiences for the therapy to be effective. You remain fully in control of what you choose to share throughout the process.
I often integrate Rewind Therapy with hypnosis and relaxation techniques, helping clients access a calm and focused state where difficult memories can be processed more comfortably and safely. Many people find this approach gentler and less overwhelming than more traditional exposure-based therapies.
